2nd Fix Carpentry and Joinery
The joinery you actually see: doors hung true, skirting and architrave mitred tight, staircases and finishing work.
1st Fix Carpentry
First fix carpentry is the structural timber work that happens before the walls are plastered: floor joists, stud partitions, roof timbers, door linings and noggins. V&M Home Extensions carry out first fix carpentry on extensions, renovations and structural alterations across Norfolk and Suffolk.

The work
First fix is everything made of timber that disappears behind the plaster. Floor joists, stud partitions, roof timbers, door linings, window boards and the noggins that later hold a radiator or a wall unit up. None of it is seen when the job is finished, and all of it decides whether the finished job is any good.
It is also the stage where mistakes get expensive. A stud wall that is out of plumb is a skirting board that will not sit flat and a door that will not hang square, three weeks later and two trades down the line. Getting first fix set out properly is the cheapest thing you can do on a building job.

Questions
Straight answers. Where something depends on your property, we say so rather than guessing.
First fix is the timber work that goes in before plastering and is hidden afterwards: joists, stud walls, roof timbers and door linings. Second fix is the visible joinery fitted after plastering: doors, skirting, architrave and staircase parts. V&M carry out both, which keeps one team responsible from structure through to finish.
